Ten minutes. It’s the time for a slightly long coffee break or for a song listened to all the way through. Yet, according to new scientific research, ten minutes of intense physical exercise are enough to activate a biological response in the body capable of hindering the growth of some tumor cells, in particular those of intestinal cancer.
An intriguing discovery, because it overturns the idea that to obtain profound benefits, long, tiring workouts are needed and reserved for those who have the time and perseverance. Here the message is different, more accessible: even a short effort can trigger surprising changes, at a molecular level.
What happens in the body during ten minutes of intense exercise?
The key point is the blood. During intense physical activity, even if short-lived, our body releases a series of molecules into the bloodstream that do more than improve physical fitness or metabolism. These substances, the researchers explain, act as real chemical messengers, capable of influencing the behavior of cells, including tumor cells.
When the blood “activated” by exercise was put in contact with colon cancer cells in the laboratory, scientists observed a clear effect: over a thousand genes changed their activity. They are genes involved in DNA repair, energy production and regulation of cell growth. In other words, the environment created by exercise makes it harder for cancer cells to proliferate and, at the same time, helps healthy cells repair genetic damage.
There is one detail that is more striking than others. The exercise stimulated genes linked to the functioning of mitochondria, the “power plants” of cells, improving the use of oxygen. At the same time it turned off those associated with rapid and disorderly growth, one of the typical characteristics of cancer cells. It’s as if, for a few hours, the body changed the rules of the game.
From laboratory study to potential real effects
The study involved men and women between 50 and 78 years old, all of whom were overweight or obese, a condition that increases oncological risk. After a high-intensity cycling test that lasted about ten minutes, the researchers analyzed their blood, identifying a significant increase in some proteins, including a molecule already known for its role in DNA repair. This is also an important signal, because it reinforces the idea that physical activity not only acts in prevention, but creates a biological context less favorable to the development of cancer.
Perhaps the most encouraging fact is precisely this: there is no need to become an athlete, nor to turn your life upside down. A single workout, even isolated, is capable of sending powerful signals to the body. It’s a concrete, almost reassuring reminder that every movement counts.
In the UK, bowel cancer is among the most common and it is estimated that physical activity can reduce the risk by around 20%. But the message is valid everywhere. Moving doesn’t just mean going to the gym: it can mean walking at a brisk pace, climbing stairs, cycling, transforming small moments of the day into opportunities for activity.
The research now looks ahead. Scientists want to understand whether these effects are strengthened with repeated training and how they can interact with traditional cancer therapies. Meanwhile, one thing appears increasingly clear: the body responds to movement quickly and intelligently, and even a few minutes can make the difference.
