4.5 magnitude earthquake in the Catania area: schools are closed in various municipalities in the province

The earth trembles in eastern Sicily. This morning at 7.05 a magnitude 4.5 earthquake woke up many people with a start. The earthquake was recorded 3 km north-west of Ragalna (Catania), at a depth of only 4 km, and was clearly felt by the various towns in the Ionian-Etna area between Messina and Catania.

In addition to Ragalna, the reports came mainly from Paternò, Riposto, Giarre and Belpasso and even from Augusta. At the moment, fortunately, there has been no damage to property or people. As a precaution, however, schools in Catania were closed.

“The earthquake invites us to be extremely cautious and to carry out the necessary controls within the institutes. We are suspending educational activities, I invite the children not to go to school” announced the mayor Enrico Trantino.

The same decision was also taken in other municipalities in the province such as Belpasso and Aci Sant’Antonio.
