The earth shook violently in the Andean department of Ayacucho, Peru, unleashing moments of terror among the population and causing damage to infrastructure and civilian homes. The seismic event occurred at 1pm on August 19, 2026 with the epicenter located 35 kilometers north of the city of Coracora, in the province of Parinacochas.
The Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) recorded a magnitude of 7.2 with a depth of 108 kilometers, estimating an intensity between the third and fourth degree of the seismic scale in Coracora. Different assessments came from the US Geological Survey, which calculated a magnitude of 6.7, placing the hypocenter at 66.7 kilometers deep and 38 kilometers north-west of Upahuacho. The telluric movement, clearly felt also in Arequipa, Ica, Abancay and in the capital Lima, was followed by an aftershock of magnitude 4.2 recorded at 4.30 pm, as well as a dozen micro-shocks detected by the Sara Sara seismographic station.
An earthquake of magnitude 7.2 was recorded late on the fifth day, 35 quilometers north of the Coracora district, not in Peru, according to the Instituto Geofísico do Peru.

The budget of the Minister of Defense and the medical centers affected
A detailed picture of the impact on the territory was drawn by Defense Minister Rafael Belaunde during an institutional intervention. The official provisional toll highlights three minor injuries, along with the damage to 22 homes, 6 schools and 12 medical facilities. The highest concentration of residential damage occurred in the city of Puquio, capital of the province of Lucanas, where there were eight damaged properties.
To evaluate the stability of the health facilities and coordinate the emergency response, the director of the Decentralized Directorate of the Civil Defense Institute (Indeci) of Ayacucho moved to the affected area together with the regional governor. The reconnaissance operations were also supported by the declarations of the head of Civil Protection Luis Vásquez and the mayor of the province of Parinacochas Yony Reyes, who confirmed the start of structural checks on the entire provincial perimeter.
REPORTS | Thus the powerful earthquake that struck today in Peru was detected, without leaving the victims until the moment: the first report indicated a magnitude of 7.2, although later it was reduced to 6.7.

Blackouts, rock collapses but no tsunami risk
The consequences of the earthquake extended beyond the borders of the Ayacucho department. The National Center for Emergency Operations (COEN) reported an interruption to the electricity grid in the province of Nazca, located in the Ica region, a blackout that left over 6,000 users in the dark. The impact of the earthquake on the mountain walls generated rock detachments and landslides along various rural communication routes.
Despite the intensity of the seismic phenomenon, the Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation of the Peruvian Navy has excluded any risk of tsunami along the country’s coastal coast, confirming the absence of threats to maritime populations and allowing rescuers to concentrate all efforts in the affected inland areas.
