The panbaulet, also known as pan carré or bread in cassette, is now a classic of our pantry: soft, ready for use, perfect for toast and fast snacks. With about 1.2 billion euros in sales in 2023 and a 93% penetration in Italian families, this product has become a real must. But how much can we trust?
The life jacket He put under the lens 14 brands of panbaulet, white and wholemeal, hunting for contaminants. The following brands were taken as the test samples:
What was found in the bread on the box
The analyzes of the Life jacket They highlighted some important critical issues in industrial panbaulet. Among the 14 samples examined, 5 showed traces of glyphosate (in concentrations from 0.01 to 0.03 µg/kg), the most used herbicide in the world considered “probable carcinogen” from the IRC.
Almost all the products then contained other pesticides, such as Piperonylbutoxide and Tebuconazole, while in five samples, three of which are full, Alfa and Cypermethrins were detected, toxic for bees and water organisms and suspects to interfere with the endocrine system. Only the only organic integral product of the test was completely devoid of pesticides.
No product was then cleaned in terms of mycotoxins, in particular ocher axic, toxic substance for kidneys and liver and possible carcinogenic agent, present in all samples, with values that went from 0.21 to 1.30 µg/kg; Higher levels were recorded in the Certosa Panbaulet sold by Lidl and in the integral Esselunga.
Deossinivalenolo (Don) was found in six samples, always well below the legal limits, but the overall presence of glyphosate, pesticides and mycotoxins in some panbauletti remains a cause for caution, especially for children and for the combined effect of multiple contaminants, the so -called cocktail effect.
Furthermore, if it is true that the integral panbauletti bring more fibers and nutrients than the classic white versions, the test has shown that even among the wholemes there is no shortage of traces of pesticides, glyphosate and mycotoxins, therefore choosing integral does not automatically mean putting a healthier and safer product on the table.
The worst products
Among the analyzed panbaulets, five products are distinguished by the most significant presence of contaminants and the least recommendable were found according to the test of the Life jacket. These are:
