In times of increases, even a simple gesture like drinking an espresso risks becoming a luxury. And so in Venafro, in the province of Isernia, the Don Antò cafeteria found a creative alternative to face inflation: allow customers to pay coffee with a barter. An idea that, in the words of the owner Ida of Ciacco and her husband Moreno Spada, represents a “silent protest“Against the increases that affect bars and consumers.
How the barter works at Bar Don Antò works
The principle is simple: those who enter the counter must not necessarily pay with coins or ATMs, but can bring typical regional products in return. Thus, a cup can apply a piece of Calabrian ‘nduja, a tray of Sicilian cannoli, a fresh mozzarella or even saffron. Every day the cafeteria thus turns into a gastronomic meeting point that crosses Italy from north to south.
Protagonists off -site students
The initiative has above all conquered the off -site students, who take advantage of the formula to bring the specialties of their regions as a gift. But it is not just savings: this system enhances local excellence, creating a moment of cultural exchange and strengthening the sense of community. The bar thus becomes a small social laboratory where coffee combines stories and traditions.
Also sustainability in the center
In addition to the barter, Don Antò encourages customers to bring his reusable cup from home, reducing the use of disposable glasses and limiting the consumption of water and energy necessary for washing. A choice that adds an ecological dimension to the initiative, transforming the daily rite into an act of responsibility towards the environment.
A replicable model?
Venafro’s experiment shows that creativity can become a concrete response to economic and environmental problems. Between inflation and dear-energy, a bartered coffee is not only a curious gimmick, but a way to bring the ritual most loved by the Italians back to its essence: a moment of encounter, sharing and conviviality.
