A video recently shared on TikTok has gone around the web, sparking strong indignation among users and local authorities. The images show a man forcefully dragging a Hawaiian green turtle along the shore to take a photo, while a woman films the scene.
@itsbleuworld PSA: My pawrent took me to the beach today and we saw people touching a sea turtle. Please remember DO NOT touch sea turtles in Hawai’i, regardless of their condition, alive or dead. They are protected animals. You must stay at least 10 feet away from them and avoid taking close-up photos or interacting with them in any way. This is not okay. #fyp #seaturtle #awareness #hawaii #dontdothis

A protected species
A disturbing and disgusting behavior, without any respect for a poor defenseless animal and made even worse by the fact that Hawaiian green turtles, known locally as honu, are a protected species under state laws and the federal Endangered Species Act. Approaching or harassing a turtle can result in severe penalties, including fines starting at $250 and up to a year in prison.
A gesture that could have been dangerous
An action that could also prove dangerous given that the authorities reiterate how essential it is to maintain at least 3 meters distance from these animals, despite their apparent calm. Their robust beaks can in fact inflict serious wounds if provoked.
When appearing takes precedence over everything
The episode, which occurred in East Honolulu, is at the center of investigations by local authorities. The video, which went viral within hours, was widely shared online, sparking unanimous condemnation. All this for a selfie to post on social media without realizing how such a gesture can turn into a concrete risk for already threatened species (which should be protected rather than endangered) and for themselves. Yet the desire to appear on social media has taken precedence, once again.
In a context where tourism and nature meet daily, individual responsibility becomes fundamental to avoid harmful actions. Even small, seemingly harmless behaviors can have significant consequences. This is why it is essential to disseminate videos like these, promoting awareness and respect for marine fauna.
