Nairobi Birdman: the legendary man who single-handedly saves and cares for injured birds in Kenya

Rodgers Oloo Magutha, known as the Nairobi Birdman, has cultivated his passion for birds since he was a child, growing up near Lake Nakuru National Park, one of the richest avian habitats in Kenya. Despite a difficult life and without a stable home, Magutha found solace in observing the park’s flamingos, storks and kites, developing a deep connection with the natural world that has remained with him to this day.

This childhood curiosity soon became a real mission: to save and care for birds injured or weakened by accidents, diseases or traps. His experience has allowed him to assist dozens of different species, from marabou to owls, from doves to African crows, often found along the capital’s dangerous streets.

Saving homeless birds

For a long time, Rodgers lived on the streets, sharing space with the birds he rescued and having many difficulties managing multiple species at the same time. Even now, with a small stable home, challenges remain: Feeding large birds like marabou requires large quantities of food, and sometimes he is forced to release the animals before they are fully healed.

In addition to logistics, professional veterinary support is lacking. Rodgers deals with sick or injured animals without official licenses, relying solely on his practical experience and passion. This exposes him to misunderstandings: some even accuse him of shamanism or witchcraft, impressed by his closeness to birds.

A crucial role in urban conservation

In reality, however, conservation experts underline the importance of Rodgers’ work: Kenya suffers from a lack of rehabilitation centers for birds and many injured animals would risk not surviving without interventions like his.

Caring for birds requires specific skills, and volunteers like Magutha fill a critical void in urban conservation. Rodgers’ dream is to open a real poultry sanctuary, safe, legal and equipped to guarantee optimal care. Until then, he continues his work on the streets of Nairobi, carrying forward with dedication the passion born among the waters and flamingos of Lake Nakuru.
