Fight against tax evasion, over 2.4 million letters arriving from the Revenue Agency: what they are and how to respond

This year the Revenue Agency announced the sending of over 2 million 400 thousand compliance letters, tools used to report any tax irregularities to taxpayers. These are not actual investigations, but preventive communications that allow errors or omissions to be corrected before they turn into sanctions.

Who will receive the letters and why

The letters will be sent to a wide range of taxpayers, from individuals to VAT numbers, and have mainly the function of reminders. As explained by director Vincenzo Carbone at Telefisco 2026, the communications remind us of missed deadlines or anomalies in the data declared, offering the opportunity to regularize one’s position.

Some letters will concern those who have forgotten to file their tax returns or send periodic communications, but the presence of an irregularity does not automatically imply an audit. “There is no automation on the controls, and there is no generative AI” Carbone underlined, explaining that each position is carefully analyzed before sending.

What to do if you receive a letter

Receiving a compliance letter should not cause alarm. The communication indicates the inconsistencies found and allows the taxpayer to intervene through active repentance. This tool allows you to:

Alternatively, if you believe you are in compliance, you can send documents or elements to support your position. The aim is to prevent formal assessment, offering an opportunity for regularization without immediate consequences. In any case, communication takes place via ordinary or certified mail and provides precise instructions on how to proceed.

Last year over 200 thousand total tax evaders were discovered

The initiative is part of a broader program of tax controls and compliance. Last year the Agency intercepted over 200 thousand tax evaders in total, including individuals and businesses, of which 57% had not submitted a tax return. Some positions, around 86 thousand, were completely unknown to the tax authorities, highlighting how preventive communications are an effective tool for preventing evasion and irregularities.
