The test results
Almost all the drain cleaners analyzed are actually able to clear blocked drains. The most effective were Mr. Muscolo Niagara kitchen granules and Bio-Chem professional drain cleaner, both based on concentrated caustic soda, capable of dissolving most of the blockage. Melt, formulated with strong acid, also achieved excellent results, but was penalized for being excessively aggressive on the materials.
The downside, however, is worrying. The effectiveness of these products comes at a very high price in terms of safety and sustainability. Most of the drain cleaners tested are corrosive to skin and eyes, can cause serious burns and allergic reactions. From an environmental point of view, the picture is no better: almost all products, often due to the presence of chlorine, are classified as toxic for the aquatic environment with long-term effects.
Those looking for more eco-friendly alternatives could turn to biodegradable products or home remedies such as Coca Cola. But unfortunately, the tests of Altroconsumo confirm that these solutions, although safer, are not effective enough in the case of serious obstructions. Mr Muscolo Biodegradabile, for example, was the best environmentally speaking but removed less than 20% of the blockage, a disappointing result when you really need to clear a blocked drain.
Rapida also showed similar performance, confirming that drain cleaners that are “kind” to the environment often do not have the strength necessary to resolve major blockages. These remedies, therefore, may be fine for preventive maintenance or light obstructions, but they do not represent an effective solution in an emergency.
Be careful with professional products
A particularly alarming fact concerns some products intended exclusively for professional use but which could end up in the hands of consumers. Melt, present in the test, contains substances that should only be used by professionals with the necessary protection. Glug, not included in the test but also based on phosphoric acid, is also indicated for professional use only: it can be very effective, but involves high risks, which is why Altroconsumo We do not recommend domestic use.
The issue is not trivial: these highly chemically aggressive products can cause serious burns, emit dangerous vapors and, if used incorrectly, seriously damage pipes or react unpredictably with other substances present in the drains.
The ranking: the best (and worst) drain cleaners of the test
Among the 12 products tested, as already mentioned, a winner emerges for value for money: Mr. Muscolo Niagara cooking granules, which obtains an overall rating of 71 (excellent quality) and is considered the best in the test and also the best purchase. With a price that varies between 1.93 and 2.99 euros for 250 grams, this drain cleaner in a granular formulation based on caustic soda has proven to be very effective on blockages without damaging surfaces. It is used by pouring 50 grams into the drain and leaving it to act for 15 minutes. However, it can cause serious skin burns and eye injuries, so it should be handled with extreme caution.
For those looking for a professional product, Bio-Chem Professional liquid drain cleaner was the most effective in the test, with an overall rating of 66 (good quality). It costs between 15 and 17.99 euros per liter and requires doses of 100-200 ml to be left to act overnight. This also contains concentrated caustic soda, is corrosive and can cause allergic skin reactions, but in tests it did not affect surfaces.
At the other end of the scale we find biodegradable products which, although safer and more environmentally friendly, have disappointed in their performance, removing less than 20% of the blockage.

How the test was conducted
Altroconsumo purchased the 12 drain cleaners in October 2025, selecting them from the most popular brands in large-scale retail trade, in specialized stores and online. The laboratory tests were conducted between November and December 2025, while the price collection dates back to December 2025.
The final judgment is based on precise and considered criteria. The laboratory tests account for 65% of the total and evaluate both the effectiveness in removing a blockage of standard weight and composition (using the doses and times indicated on the label), and the aggressiveness on different surfaces.
To be used only in case of emergency
The conclusion of the test Altroconsumo is clear: chemical drain cleaners work, but they should be considered as a last resort, to be used only in the event of a real emergency. Prevention remains the best strategy: avoid throwing food residue, hair and other materials down the drain, use protective nets and periodically pour boiling water to keep the pipes clean.
When you really can’t do without them, it is essential to follow the instructions scrupulously, use gloves and protection, ventilate the environment well and keep these products out of the reach of children and animals. And always remember that behind that bottle there is a concentration of aggressive chemical substances which, if on the one hand they clear the drains, on the other, weigh enormously on the environment and can damage our health.
