“Vanina – An assistant commissioner in Catania” returns tonight on Canale 5 (between new investigations and old ghosts): the locations of the fiction

From this evening, Wednesday 4 March, at 9.10pm in prime time on Canale 5 it returns Vanina – An assistant commissioner in Cataniathe crime series with Giusy Buscemi in the role of a brilliant and restless investigator. The second season starts again from a concrete threat: Salvatore Fratta, the person ultimately responsible for the murder of Vanina’s father, is still free. And a disturbing signal – a bullet left in the house – rekindles the fear that seemed dormant.

Vanina Guarrasi appears solid, determined, with her investigative flair intact. But something cracked inside. The desire for happiness tries to make space alongside the sense of duty, while the relationship with the magistrate Paolo Malfitano, played by Giorgio Marchesi, goes through a delicate moment. He promises to leave the Anti-Mafia, but first he wants to settle accounts with the past. And the past, in Catania, never really remains buried.

Crimes under Etna: the plot of the new episodes

The new episodes intertwine complex cases and personal tensions: a benefactor found dead in the basement of a pub, a body missing in an abandoned hotel, a murder during the feast of Sant’Agata. Investigations that put the Mobile team to the test and delve into the contradictions of a restless and vital city.

Taken from Cristina Cassar Scalia’s novels, the series confirms Sicily not as a simple background, but as a living character who influences choices and destinies. The direction by Davide Marengo and Riccardo Mosca amplifies this bond, returning a visual story that alternates blinding light and deep shadows.

Catania absolute protagonist: the locations of “Vanina”

Filmed for ninety days in the heart of the Etna capital, the drama is a declared homage to Catania. From the monumental Piazza Vincenzo Bellini to the baroque Piazza Duomo, from the Ursino Castle to the monumental cemetery, up to the Ognina seafront and the Plaia, each location becomes an integral part of the narrative.

And then there is her, her majesty Etna, “in Muntagna”, a constant and silent presence. The volcano dominates the horizon like a tutelary deity, symbol of a city that never sleeps and lives suspended between eruption and quiet. Just like Vanina: restless and determined, fragile and very strong, ready to chase the truth even when it hurts. The second season raises the stakes: more introspection, more tension, more Catania. And a question that remains suspended between the lava roads and the blue sea: can one really escape one’s past?
