Punch is no longer alone: the little Japanese macaque has found a playmate (but a sad life awaits him)

Punch, the young Japanese macaque who went viral for his loneliness, finally seems to have found a playmate. Visitors to the Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden in Japan saw him interacting with a female macaque named Moe, exchanging cuddles, caresses and moments of play, demonstrating his improving socialization.

From loneliness to a new social routine

We now know his story, after having become very popular on social media. Punch had captured the hearts of millions after being rejected by his biological mother and isolated from the rest of the group. The little macaque had clung to an orange stuffed animal, which had become his symbol of comfort and his most trusted companion. Now, while continuing to carry the stuffed animal with him, Punch seems to spend more time among his peers and new friends, showing a more peaceful and playful side.

A friendship or something more?

The videos and photos shared online quickly sparked fans’ imaginations, leading many to talk of a real ‘engagement’ between Punch and Moe. In reality, experts point out that Punch is only seven months old, while Moe is a five-year-old adult female, so rather than a romantic bond it is about social and emotional support. The behaviors observed, such as cuddling and playing, indicate that Moe is helping Punch integrate into group life and feel less isolated.

It remains an animal in captivity (and spectacularized)

Despite the joy over Punch’s progress, it is important to remember that he is a captive animal whose story continues to be spectacularized globally.

Social media have amplified every interaction, transforming moments of play into viral phenomena, not to mention what has been done by some companies such as Ikea and Crocs who have turned it into a marketing product. It is certainly reassuring that the young macaque is learning to live in a group, but let’s not forget the life he is forced to live far from his habitat and constantly at the center of everyone’s attention.
