An exceptional train stoppage will affect the Rome-Florence high-speed line over the weekend, due to technological modernization works of national importance. From midnight on Saturday 11th April until 3pm on Sunday 12th, the stretch between Rovezzano and Settebagni will not be passable, with direct consequences on High Speed, Intercity and Regional trains.
The suspension concerns the installation and activation of the European ERTMS system, the most advanced convoy control system, which will make the entire national railway network safer and more modern. At the same time, on the conventional Rome-Florence line, traffic between Orte and Rome Tiburtina will be suspended from 2pm on Saturday until the early hours of Sunday, with particular attention to the Orvieto-Settebagni section, the last segment to be updated with the new technology.
Impacts and alternative routes
Travelers will have to deal with reduced service, rerouted routes and a possible increase in travel times. Trenitalia and other railway companies expect cancellations and modifications to many trains, while convoys routed on alternative lines, in particular the Tyrrhenian route, will suffer inevitable slowdowns.
The return to normal operations will be gradual: traffic will resume as early as 3pm on Sunday 12 April, but with limited offers and longer travel times. Further critical issues are expected on the morning of Monday 13 April, especially between Orvieto Sud and Settebagni, while the service will return to full regularity only starting from Tuesday 14 April.
Tips for travellers
To limit inconvenience, railway companies invite passengers to check the status of trains in advance through official channels and to plan any alternatives. In the main stations involved, the assistance service will be strengthened to support those who need to change their journey. Despite the interruptions, regional connections in Lazio remain guaranteed, in particular towards the Rome Fair, so as not to isolate commuters.
