Salento, in August, attracts thousands of visitors every year, the symbolic locations of the Ionian and Adriatic coast – from Pescoluse to Porto Cesareo, up to Baia Verde – easily reach full houses, especially in the weeks around Ferragosto.
This, however, does not mean that it is impossible to find less chaotic corners of the coast. Just move away from the most famous beaches, choose less publicized beaches or stretches of coast where services are limited.
Why choose a less frequented beach
The less traveled locations have a clear advantage: they allow you to experience the sea at a slower pace. There is more space, less noise and an environment that still retains part of the original charm of Salento.
Of course, you shouldn’t expect equipped establishments every hundred meters or seafronts full of clubs. In many cases it is necessary to walk a few more minutes or give up some comforts. In exchange you find transparent water, natural landscapes and a decidedly more relaxed atmosphere.
Marina di Mancaversa
A few kilometers from Gallipoli, Marina di Mancaversa represents a valid alternative for those who want to avoid the crowding of Baia Verde. Here the coast alternates small coves and rock platforms with spots suitable for bathing. The sea is clear and the environment maintains a more peaceful character than the nearby towns.
Castiglione Tower
One of the most beautiful stretches of coast on the Ionian coast extends between Torre Lapillo and Punta Prosciutto. Torre Castiglione preserves dunes, Mediterranean scrub and long beaches where, moving away from the main accesses, it is still possible to find less congested spaces even in the height of summer.
Acquaviva di Marittima
Those who prefer the Adriatic coast can choose this small inlet nestled among the rocks. The water is particularly fresh thanks to the springs that feed the bay and the natural context makes it a destination especially appreciated by snorkelling and cliff lovers.
Pali Tower
The main beach is very popular with families, but just move towards the ends of the coast to find a decidedly more relaxed environment. The seabed remains low and sandy, also ideal for those traveling with children.
Tricase Porto
More than a classic seaside resort, Tricase Porto is a small village overlooking the sea. Here the cliff, the small port and a still authentic atmosphere predominate, far from the mass tourism that characterizes other areas of Salento.
Suda Tower
The coast is mainly rocky and this characteristic keeps some of the summer tourism away. The sea is very transparent and the location is also a good starting point for exploring the lower Salento without staying in the more crowded areas.
Lido Marini
Despite being a well-known destination, Lido Marini still offers less frequented areas. The sections furthest from the center and the beach establishments allow you to find greater tranquility without giving up the sandy beach and shallow waters.
The coves between Castro and Santa Cesarea Terme
The stretch of coast that connects Castro to Santa Cesarea Terme hides numerous little-known accesses to the sea. Here the landscape changes completely compared to the Ionian coast: cliffs, cliffs and small inlets offer clear waters and spectacular scenery.
Marina Serra
Among the most characteristic places in the lower Salento is Marina Serra, known for its natural swimming pool carved into the rock. It is an ideal destination for those who love rocks, crystal clear sea and an environment that still retains a genuine identity.
Fellonian
Located just before Santa Maria di Leuca, Felloniche is a cozy bay that offers its best in the early hours of the morning. By arriving early, especially on weekdays, you can enjoy transparent water and a decidedly quieter atmosphere than the more famous beaches.
How to avoid the crowds even in August
In August it is now difficult to find a completely deserted beach in Salento, especially during the week of August. With some precautions, however, it is still possible to enjoy the sea in a more relaxed atmosphere. The first piece of advice is to arrive early, preferably by 8.30, when it is easier to find parking and choose the best spot to park. Even the day of the week makes a difference: on weekdays the turnout is generally lower than on weekends.
Another strategy is to move away from the main accesses and central areas of the beaches, which tend to fill up first. The ends of the beach, as well as the coves and stretches of rocky coast, are often less frequented and allow you to experience the sea with greater tranquility. Finally, it is worth taking into consideration the lesser-known marinas: despite offering clear waters and suggestive landscapes, they continue to attract a lower number of visitors than the more famous places in Salento.
One last piece of advice
In recent years the concept of “secret beach” has become increasingly relative. Many once little-known places are now popular thanks to social networks.
For this reason, the real difference is not only the destination chosen, but also the arrival time, the day of the week and the willingness to travel a few hundred meters more than the main accesses. This is often enough to rediscover that sense of tranquility that makes a day at the seaside in Salento special.
