Nepal disaster, a new landslide has created a damming lake, rescuers have been evacuated

Nepal, the situation following the disaster on Wednesday 26 August is far from resolved: a dam lake, with a quantity of water sufficient to fill around 1,000 Olympic swimming pools, has formed following a new landslide discovered in Tibet. The rescue teams working on site were evacuated, making everything even more complicated.

Huo Jianxina member of the vanguard group of the Chinese search and rescue team (which includes 2,141 rescuers), told the agency on August 28 Xinhua that the team used drones, search dogs and vital sign detectors in the search operations, reaching the central area of ​​the disaster on the afternoon of August 28th.

But the rescuers themselves admitted that the operations remained difficult due to the difficult terrain, the risk of secondary disasters, the damaged roads (including a section of the G216, which leads to the port of Gyirong) and communications interruptions.

As an important trade hub for the China-Nepal border, the national land port Gyirong it is normally characterized by intense commercial activity, a high population density and an extensive infrastructure.

And the disaster occurred during daytime working hours, when many people were present at the port, a factor that rescuers say may have contributed to the high number of victims.

According to what was reported by local media, the China Annenga state-owned engineering and rescue company, has deployed 60 specialized technicians and mobilized 14 emergency vehicles, including excavators and loaders, to try to reopen the damaged section of the G216.

But, as many experts feared, unfortunately the authorities reported that they had located a barrier lake, formed upstream from the port, in an unstable geological context, so much so that it could unfortunately give way, putting rescue operations downstream at risk.

For this reason the rescuers were evacuated, an absolutely necessary operation, which however will further complicate the rescue and safety operations of the places affected by the disaster.

The latest updates from local authorities speak of 752 victims and over 2,500 missing. So the budget, unfortunately, could increase.
