When the heat in the plains becomes difficult to bear, just go up towards the Orobie mountains to find another summer. Among the Lombard villages where you can seek refreshment is Oltre il Colle, a small town in the province of Bergamo set in a spectacular Alpine valley at around 1,030 meters above sea level.
Here the climate changes rapidly: woods, meadows, mountain air and the altitude offer more liveable days and cool nights. In summer it is not uncommon to sleep with the window open and a blanket at hand, while in the valley the temperatures remain suffocating.
Its position is one of its strong points: the Oltre il Colle basin is protected by some of the most beautiful mountains of the Bergamo Prealps, with the peaks of Alben (2,019 m), Grem (2,049 m), Pizzo Arera (2,512 m) and Monte Menna (2,300 m) forming a natural crown for the town.

A name born from geography
Oltre il Colle owes its name to its position, in ancient times it was a fraction of Serina and only in 1569 did it obtain autonomy by becoming an independent municipality.
The meaning of the name is linked to historical routes: for those arriving from the Serina area, after crossing the hill, a new territory began, a valley rich in woods, water and mineral resources.
In past centuries this position favored the development of iron-related activities. The inhabitants were known as skilled forgers of weapons and nails, using material from the mines of Val di Scalve and Valbondione. The production of pikes was particularly famous, so much so that the Lordship of Venice ordered large quantities of these instruments to support the local economy and prevent the emigration of the workers.
Over time, the town’s economy has transformed: from mining and artisanal activities we have moved on to the valorisation of the mountains, summer tourism and snow activities.
An alpine basin between woods and large mountains
The most obvious feature of Oltre il Colle is precisely the landscape: a large green basin surrounded by mountains, pastures and forests.
The town includes several localities and hamlets surrounded by nature, with an ideal environment for those looking for a less crowded mountain than the more famous Alpine destinations. The sensation upon arriving here is that of entering a different rhythm: less noise, more silence, paths that practically start from the town and a dimension still on a human scale.

The Plant Cathedral of Plassa
In the Plassa area there is the Vegetal Cathedral, a large artistic installation surrounded by greenery. The structure reproduces the shape of a cathedral through columns and naves made with natural elements and trees destined to grow over time. It is an interesting stop for a walk and for those looking for an unusual place to photograph.
The Museum of Minerals and Mines of Zorzone
In Zorzone, a hamlet of Oltre il Colle, the museum allows you to get to know the mining past of the area up close. The visit tells how people worked in the mines, which minerals were extracted and how much this activity affected the life and economy of local families. A particularly interesting place to understand a concrete aspect of the country’s history.
The town and its districts
It is also worth dedicating some time to a walk in the center and in the districts of Oltre il Colle. Among mountain houses, stone buildings, fountains, churches and glimpses of the surrounding mountains you can observe the still typically Alpine character of the town. From here you can also easily reach paths and walks in the woods and pastures of the area.

Pizzo Arera (2,512 metres)
It is the symbolic mountain of the area, one of the most spectacular peaks of the Orobie. From the Oltre il Colle area you reach the Capanna 2000 refuge, the starting point for excursions and climbs towards the Arera.
Mount Alben
Another important peak, loved by hikers and mountaineering enthusiasts. The Alben offers remarkable views and routes between limestone rocks, ridges and paths.
Mount Grem
A gentler mountain, much appreciated for excursions in all seasons, with great views of the Val Serina and the Orobie.
Refuges and alpine paths
The area allows you to alternate quiet walks in the woods with more challenging excursions towards higher altitudes, with various refreshment points and spectacular views.
How to get there
From Milan you can arrive in about an hour and a half/two hours, traffic permitting. It’s close enough for an escape from the weekend heat, but far enough away to retain an authentic feel.
Oltre il Colle is a destination suitable above all for those seeking fresh air, nature and tranquility without undertaking a long journey to the Alps. It is not the classic town to visit in a few hours ticking off a list of monuments: its strong point is the territory, to be experienced slowly between walks, refuges, woods and panoramas.
For a first visit, a day may be enough, alternating a walk in the town, the Vegetal Cathedral and a stop in the hamlets. With a weekend available, however, you can add an excursion to Capanna 2000, Monte Grem or one of the numerous paths in the valley.
In summer it is still advisable to bring a sweatshirt or a light jacket, especially for the evening: at over a thousand meters above sea level the temperature can drop quickly even after a hot day. For those who want to walk, shoes suitable for the paths are recommended and, before excursions at high altitude, it is always a good idea to check the weather and conditions of the paths.
The most pleasant period generally goes from late spring to early autumn, when meadows and woods allow you to fully enjoy the landscape. On summer weekends it is better to leave early, especially if the goal is to reach the starting points of the most popular excursions.
Oltre il Colle therefore works well both as a day trip from Bergamo and Milan and as a base for spending a few days in the Orobie area. The advice is simple: don’t arrive with the idea of ”seeing everything”, but choose a walk, stop at a refuge or restaurant in the area and give yourself time to be outdoors.
Because the real reason for climbing up here, especially in the hottest weeks, is perhaps the simplest of all: to rediscover that summer of fresh air, woods and nights in which you can finally sleep well.
