She had entered a shop for a normal errand, but what should have been an ordinary morning turned into a sudden emergency. A 37-year-old woman was in fact rescued after experiencing symptoms attributable to intoxication caused by the accidental inhalation of a detergent.
The episode occurred on the morning of Sunday 30 August in a commercial business in via Enrico Berlinguer, in Prato. The woman apparently began to feel ill while inside the store.
The situation required immediate emergency intervention. Those present called 118 and an ambulance arrived on site with doctors, who found a toxicological crisis linked to the inhalation of substances.
The woman was assisted and stabilized on site, then transported to hospital under code red, the one initially attributed to the situation due to the severity of the symptoms. Once she arrived at the emergency room of the Prato hospital, however, her condition fortunately improved and the code was downgraded to yellow.
Despite this, the doctors decided to keep the woman under observation to monitor her clinical conditions and vital parameters and subject her to the necessary tests.
It is still unclear how the fumes occurred
Several points remain to be clarified regarding the dynamics of the accident. At the moment it seems certain that the woman had accidental inhalation of substances from a detergent, but it has not yet been established precisely how the exposure occurred.
One hypothesis is that the woman may have breathed in the fumes coming from a detergent package left open inside the shop. However, it is not excluded that the product may have accidentally spilled into the environment, increasing the concentration of its fumes inside the room.
The investigations will therefore clarify what happened and what the exact dynamics that led to the intoxication were.
However, the episode reminds us how detergents, which we often tend to underestimate, can be potentially dangerous substances, especially when their vapors disperse into the environment.
