Free trains from Rome to the most evocative villages of Lazio: book now one of the 18 trips to discover the ancient paths of Italy

Autumn is tinged with history and sustainability thanks to the initiative promoted by the Ministry of Tourism as part of the PNRR and the Caput Mundi – Ancient paths of Italy plan. Until 10 December 2026, travelers will be able to take advantage of 18 free trains departing from Rome to discover the most evocative villages of Lazio. The program is divided into two main routes managed by FS Treni Turistici Italiani and Fondazione FS Italiane, offering a complete experience that combines rail transport with dedicated shuttle buses.

The lines, connections and travel calendar to Viterbo

The first route connects Rome Termini to Viterbo and includes 7 trips on 27 September, 4 October, 11 October, 18 October, 1 November, 15 November and 22 November 2026. The train leaves at 8.15am with stops in Monterotondo at 8.49am, Montefiascone at 10.12am, Viterbo Porta Fiorentina at 10.27am and arrival in Viterbo Porta Roman at 10.35am. The zero-cost ticket includes not only the same-day return trip – with return scheduled for 3.09pm from Porta Romana – but also includes Gran Turismo bus transfers to reach pearls such as Civita di Bagnoregio and Bolsena, or the Mandela area for those who wish to explore the Cammino di San Benedetto. Dedicated assistance, information on historical routes, a restaurant service and the characteristic Pellegrino’s Box are guaranteed on board.

The director for Cassino and the mandatory booking methods

The second active route connects Rome Tiburtina to Cassino with 11 scheduled dates: 29 September, 20 October, 5, 12, 19, 24 and 26 November, and finally 1, 3, 8 and 10 December 2026. The train leaves at 7.43am to arrive at its destination at 9.57am, while the return is scheduled for 4.32pm with arrival in the capital at 6.51pm. This route offers privileged access to the Via Francigena del Sud and the historic Abbey of Montecassino, although in this case there are no dedicated shuttle buses for the last mile.

To participate in the initiative it is mandatory to book in advance, since access to the carriages is not free and places are limited. Tickets with seat reservation can be requested directly on the Trenitalia website and app, at station ticket offices, self-service vending machines or through authorized travel agencies. An unmissable opportunity to experience slow tourism and rediscover the scenic and spiritual wonders of the Lazio region without spending a single euro.
