Friday will be an uphill day for those in Rome who rely on public transport. The USB union has proclaimed a 24-hour national general strike for 30 October which, as Roma Servizi per la Mobilità communicates, will involve the entire Atac network and that of the private operators Autoservizi Troiani/Sap, Autoservizi Tuscia/Bis and Atr. On the Atac network the protest also concerns the lines that other companies manage under subcontracting.
The guarantee bands
Buses, trams and metro will run regularly from the start of the service until 8.29am and then from 5pm to 7.59pm. Outside these times, i.e. between 8.30am and 5pm and from 8pm to the end of service, rides are not guaranteed.
The two nights at risk
The effects will be felt already on the night between Thursday 29th and Friday 30th, when the night “N” lines could remain closed. However, the daytime lines will be guaranteed with trips scheduled after midnight and the night trips of lines 38, 44, 61, 86, 170, 246, 301, 314, 404, 444, 451, 664, 881, 916 and 980. The following night the picture changes completely: between Friday and Saturday the “N”s are guaranteed again, while after the 24 hours are not the metro A, B/B1 and C, the daytime lines with runs after midnight and the night lines of lines 8, 38, 44, 61, 86, 170, 246, 301, 314, 404, 444, 451, 664, 881, 916 and 980.
Stations, ticket offices and services
In metro stations that remain open, escalators, elevators and stairlifts will not work: the accessibility status is updated on the Atac website. Ticket offices closed, but online purchasing remains active and at the station or on board surface transport you can pay by credit or debit card. The interchange car parks remain open, the bike boxes do not, with the exception of the Ionian station. Possible changes also for ClicBus, Atac’s on-call service, which publishes updates on its app. Finally, the Rome Mobility Services desk in via Silvio D’Amico and the contact center 06.57003 are at risk. Outside the Municipality there could be inconveniences on the extra-urban Cotral connections, with repercussions on the Metromare and Roma Nord lines.
The reasons for the protest
Usb calls for interventions on wages, pensions and the general economic condition, and contests rearmament policies, support for Israel and Ukraine, police measures and what it defines as “discriminatory institutional choices”. How much the stop will weigh will be seen on Friday. The precedents, according to Atac data, show a fairly stable script. The strike of 28 November 2025, called by Usb, Cub, Sgb and Cobas, was attended by 44.6% of surface staff and 17.2% of metro and regional railway staff. Last May 18, with only the USB in the streets, the percentages were 42.9% above ground and, below, just 12.2%.
