A lost camel among the cars in Salento: a disturbing signal after the postponement of the animal law in circuses

A spox camel, alone, under the relentless sun of the Salento. Walk slowly among the cars and the incredulous gaze of the passers -by at the gates of Ugento, in one of the first more torrid days of the summer. It is not an exotic postcard or the scene of a film, but the surreal reality that has occurred (once again) in these hours on an Apulian peripheral road.

The animal, exhausted and out of context, attracted the attention of dozens of motorists who filmed his silent gear between traffic and hot asphalt. In the meantime, the authorities were alerted by eye residents and witnesses.

The first hypothesis, unfortunately, is the most predictable: the camel could have escaped from a circus mounted in the area. If confirmed, this would be just yet another demonstration of how anachronistic and unfair it is to continue using exotic and wild animals for fun and entertainment. Animals that should live free in their natural habitats, and who instead end up wandering spassed between horn and plates, prisoners of a system that does not consider them sentient beings but means of entertainment.

And while public opinion is increasingly aware and contrary to the use of animals in the circuses, this news cannot fail to re -establish itself from what has just been decided by the Italian government, from which yet another cold shower comes: For the third time, the start of the law which provides for the gradual overcoming of this practice has been postponed. A law awaited for years, approved in 2017 but never really applied. The new postponement is yet another signal that the political will continues to miss, leaving animals like this camel at the mercy of the case, heat, and our indifference.

Each postponement has a cost that is not measured in money, but in screw, dignity and suffering. This episode should make us reflect: we can no longer accept that the freedom of an animal becomes “viral” only when you lose in the streets. We need a concrete change, it is necessary to consistency, it serves respect. Because as long as we continue to postpone, they will be – the animals – to pay the highest price.
