A mural for Juan Carrito: Italy’s most beloved bear now watches over his land

On the facade of the Carrito Ortona station, in Carrito, a hamlet of Ortona dei Marsi, L’Aquila, a wonderful mural. It depicts him, Juan Carritothe most famous Marsican bear in Italy.

It was he, son of the Amarena bear, the sweet protagonist of many encounters, of many incursions into inhabited centers, of a thousand judicial vicissitudes and also of many attempts to teach him to live among his peers and not close to the human being, in his mountains.

A year without Juan Carrito: in memory of the bear and his peers who died at the hands of man

But he died, hit by a car in January 2023 on state road 17, which connects Castel di Sangro to Roccaraso.

The Marsican brown bear is considered a subspecies at critical risk of extinction. In the last 50 years, 14 bears have died when hit on the roads. It is not a small number, but for a small population, these are important numbers.

Today, with that new mural Carrito pays homage to his most famous son, almost two years after that sad accident, and at the same time reminds us how important it is to know bears and learn to respect them. Living with them can be achieved by practicing specific behaviors and investing in prevention, safety and education.
