A new island appeared in the Caspian Sea

A new island was born: following a complex expedition driven byRussian Academy of Sciencesthe scientists confirmed the existence of the new natural structure about 30 km south-west of the island of Mall Zhemchuzhnyin the Caspian Sea.

Something was initially noticed in the space images by the employees of the Caspica section of the Institute in November 2024, but the question of the existence of the island has remained controversial until recently.

The last expedition, however, has now managed to approach the northern part of the island, and, even if the landing on the shore did not take place due to the shallow waters that surround it and the weather conditions, the structure was clearly visible in the images taken from the quadricotter (drone equipped with four rotors).

But now everything is confirmed: the discovery is formed following theLowering of the level of the Caspian Seawhich was followed by the emergence of the Banco di Srednyaya zhemchuzhnaya on the daytime surface.

Currently, during the period of maximum outflow of the Volga At the height of the flood, the island is one land slightly high compared to the surface of the seabut it is reasonable to think that during the low tide period, when the water level is minimal, the elevation compared to the edge of the water will be more significant.

At the time of the investigation, the surface was a humid and flat plain, complicated by sandwick crests, probably intersecting by exhaustion grooves.

If the tendency to decrease the level of Caspian Sea should continue, this island could significantly increase its surface in the coming years, therefore acquire great potential like nesting site for rare bird species and how Case of the Caspian seal.

At the moment, in order to conduct further research on bioidrochemistry, hydrobiology and dynamics of marine behavior, scientists have set up one oceanographic station At a depth of about 0.4 m in the northern low waters, in the immediate vicinity of the island.

While in the near future they will complete a primary description of the new island and have proposals for its geographical name.
