Do you dream of giving up everything and moving to a remote island? Now is your chance to make that dream a reality. The island of Handa, a little paradise off the west coast of Sutherland, Scotland, is looking for a manager to manage its wild beauty. The pay? 25,600 pounds a year, approximately 30,000 euros, plus accommodation on the island and the chance to live in close contact with nature.
A job among cliffs and seabirds
Managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, a charity dedicated to the preservation of Scotland’s natural and wildlife assets, Handa Island is a true sanctuary for wildlife. The imposing cliffs and the presence of one of the most important seabird colonies in Europe make the island the ideal refuge for nature lovers. Among the species that populate it we find guillemots, razorbills and greater skuas. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot minke whales, orcas and basking sharks off the coast.
The role, available from March 2025, involves a six-month contract, until September 2025, and does not require any particular qualifications, other than a basic knowledge of marine and terrestrial nature. In the announcement, open to all, the candidate’s specific origin is not required. The manager’s responsibilities include managing a team of volunteers, organizing activities for the 8,000 annual visitors and looking after the wildlife and the island.
Life on a timeless island
Far from the chaos of the city, the island of Handa promises a simple life immersed in silence, interrupted only by the wind and the call of birds. There are no permanent residents, but there is a trip to the nearby village of Scourie each week to take care of practical needs such as laundry and shopping.
Accommodation is included and, surprise, couples can also apply to share work and life on the island. A driving license and access to a vehicle are required, but otherwise, the Trust welcomes applicants from all backgrounds, promoting an inclusive and open environment.
The charm of Handa
The tasks to be carried out on the island of Handa go beyond the simple concept of work, given that you will have the opportunity to dedicate yourself to a world where time seems to have stopped. Living on this island means embracing a routine that revolves around the sea, the sky and the earth.

Of course, we agree that it’s not an experience for everyone, but if you love nature, are looking for a break from the frenzy and want to make a difference, it could be the call you’ve been waiting for.
