According to the meteorologist Alekya Srinivasan, in fact, the alert serves above all to report to the population that temperatures will continue to rise. One of the problems in Alaska? The notices

It was the National Weather Service who issued a weather alert for the heat: at the first notice issued on June 12, an updated notice was followed on June 16 for “High temperatures, between 29 and 31 ° C, in the internal regions of the central and north-eastern Alaska, including the areas of the cities of Tanana, Fairbanks, Fort Yukon and Eagle“.

The weather alert for the heat then followed another warning that warned by Risk floodsfor the rapid dissolution of snow and glaciers who “could cause the flooding of rivers and streams“.

The alert will remain in force until the middle of this week in different areas of Alaska, especially in the North Slope area, where “Access to the roads, landing tracks and low infrastructure may be affected by floods“.

Despite the rigid climate that characterizes most of the year, Alaska is experiencing an accelerated heating, with rates ranging from two to three times higher than the global average, with an increase of 1.67 ° C in the last 60 years. 2024 was the hottest year ever recorded worldwide, in which the average temperatures were higher than the norm, even if they have not reached record levels. Compared to the period 1991-2020, the variation was 0.9 ° C, with more significant increases in the North Slope region. In June, the maximum temperature reached 25.7 ° C, while 30 ° C were exceeded only in August.
