The University of Bari Aldo Moro has awarded an honorary degree in Veterinary Medicine to Alberto Angela, recognizing the value of a path that for years has combined scientific dissemination, research and attention to the animal world. The ceremony took place yesterday in the Veterinary Campus of Valenzano, in front of a room full of students, teachers and guests.
An acknowledgment for the dissemination and the human-animal relationship
The title was awarded for Angela’s ability to describe science in an accessible and rigorous way, but also for her contribution to the study of animal behavior and the promotion of animal welfare. A commitment that runs through his television programs and publications, leading the general public to reflect on the profound relationship between human beings and nature.
During the ceremony Angela stated:
This recognition moves me very much. It is a goal that I feel is a great responsibility, because talking about animals also means talking about us and the way we choose to inhabit this planet.
The connection with Bari and the legacy of Piero Angela
The day also had a strong symbolic value. Eight years ago, in the same university, the golden seal was awarded to Piero Angela, Alberto’s father and central figure in Italian scientific dissemination. The Aula Magna which hosted the meeting was named after him.
The link with Puglia was recalled several times by the popularizer:
Here is something that was not built by man. The sky, the earth, the people: they make you feel at peace with the world. It’s a feeling that I’ve always carried with me.
The lectio magistralis and the message to the students
The ceremony concluded with the lectio magistralis entitled “Men and animals: a thousand-year history”, a journey through science, history and evolution that highlighted how the destiny of man has always been intertwined with that of animals.
Addressing the students, Angela underlined the value of knowledge, leaving them a very important message:
Culture never goes out of fashion. It is a tool that makes us freer and more aware of our choices.
