A simple but very powerful tribute appeared on the slopes of Crans-Montana: a human heart, drawn by skiers, ski schools, representatives of the Municipality and the organizers of the 2027 World Ski Championships. An image that has made the rounds on social media and which contains the feelings of an entire community affected by the tragedy of the fire at the Le Constellation restaurant, which occurred on New Year’s Eve. A message of unity, solidarity and closeness to the victims, the injured and those providing assistance.
The drama has profoundly shaken the Canton of Valais and beyond. 40 young people lost their lives and dozens were seriously injured, leaving an indelible mark in the heart of the Alpine resort. Despite the pain, Crans-Montana chose to react as a community, transforming the slopes – a symbol of work, tourism and meeting – into a space of shared memory. The heart formed on the Chetzeron slope represents a mountain that does not forget, but which ideally holds those who suffer in an embrace.
Tourism continues, but with sobriety
The ski resorts remained open even after the tragedy, a decision that was not without criticism. However, the local authorities and the Tourist Board have reiterated the need to continue the season, which is fundamental for an area that thrives on tourism. The key word was sobriety: bars and cafes open to welcome skiers, but no music, no parties, no climate of euphoria. A delicate balance between respect for the victims and the need not to completely stop the economic and social life of the station.
Among the streets and tracks, many visitors expressed solidarity, some stopping in the commemorative spaces set up near the site of the tragedy, others choosing silence and discretion. Many tourists have decided to stay, convinced that abandoning the location would not help the community overcome such a difficult moment. Crans-Montana thus appears suspended between normality and mourning, with the awareness that moving forward does not mean forgetting.
