Individual freedom should never be a question of personal data and a certain American citizen has amply demonstrated this. After moving into the Amira Choice Champlin assisted living facility in Minnesota last year, eighty-two-year-old Anita Le Brun faced an unexpected bureaucratic limitation.
The woman, accustomed to enjoying a glass of white wine with her family, discovered that the facility was legally prohibited from serving any type of alcohol to guests as it lacks onerous state licenses. Considering the rule meaningless, the old woman chose not to give up, transforming herself into the symbol of a real awareness campaign to change local legislation.
From the halls of the Senate to the historic signing of the measure
The political mobilization was rapid and incisive. The woman spoke twice before the state legislature, bringing the demands of her generation directly before a Senate commission. The courage shown has pushed the institutions to take concrete action: this week, the Democratic governor Tim Walz personally went to the facility where the woman resides to sign the new regulatory text, already renamed locally as the grandparents’ Happy Hour law.
The measure eliminates the commercial constraints linked to the administration: starting from this month of July, centers for the elderly will be able to offer alcoholic drinks to residents and relatives during special events, with the only obligation to notify the event in advance to the control authorities.
