At just 14 years old, Sheyna Patel developed an innovative gel capable of capturing and destroying over 93% of the microplastics in the water. These tiny plastic particles, invisible to the naked eye, represent a growing threat to the oceans and marine biodiversity. Sheyna’s gel works like a sponge, trapping and removing microplastics, thus offering a concrete solution to a global environmental problem.
To develop the project, Sheyna collaborated with Deborah Isabelle, a specialist in Product Engineering at 3M. The young inventor explained how her guide helped her overcome obstacles and believe more in her ability to carry out the project. This support allowed Sheyna to refine her idea, transforming it into a working and safe prototype, ready to be tested in real contexts.
Finalist at 3M Young Scientist Challenge 2025
His invention made him finalist at the 3M Young Scientist Challenge 2025, an international competition that rewards young scientists who offer scientific solutions to daily problems. The competition selects students aged 11 to 14, evaluating creativity, scientific knowledge and communication skills. Participants have the opportunity to follow a summer mentorship program with 3M scientists, who will guide them in the development of their solutions. In addition, the finalists will go to the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, for the final competition in October, where they will present their inventions in front of a jury of experts.
Sheyna Patel’s project not only faces the problem of microplastics, but it also makes it clear how young minds can contribute to environmental safeguard. The previous editions of the competition have seen winners develop devices to detect pesticides, improve water conservation and monitor air pollution, highlighting the real impact that the ideas of young scientists can have on society.
The 3M Young Scientist Challenge continues to inspire students to explore science in a creative way and use Stem knowledge to solve concrete problems. Many former winners have reached extraordinary goals, including Ted Talks, Patents, Forbes 30 Under 30 prizes, and television appearances, showing that even the youngest can have a significant influence on the future of the planet.
