In Amsterdam, on the stage of the OBA Theater Amsterdam, dance took on a form never seen before. A dancer struck by Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) she returned to performing not with her body, but through a digital avatar guided directly by his brain waves. The technology that translates thought into dance
The heart of the experiment is a sophisticated one brain-computer interface developed by Dentsu Lab in collaboration with NTT. When Olson imagines a choreographic gesture, the system interprets it and transforms it into movement for a mixed reality avatar projected onto the stage. The result is a dance suspended between physical and virtual, where creativity no longer passes through muscles but through neural activity.
“Waves of Will”: the project that gives shape to the invisible
The performance is part of the project Waves of Willan initiative that explores new ways of expression for people with physical disabilities. The goal is not to replace the body, but to give back artistic identity through advanced technological tools. Olson talked about how complex the process is: to control the avatar you need a very high level of concentrationisolating external thoughts and stimuli. An intense mental exercise, which however allowed her to find one again form of creative freedom.
A new way of understanding disability and creativity
During the performance, the avatar danced alongside other real dancers, creating an intertwining of physical and digital presence. The audience witnessed a new choreographic language, where the movement comes directly from the mind. For Olson, the moment on stage was a return to artistic life: an experience that rebuilt a bond with dance lost due to illness. Technology, in this case, does not replace art, but expands it.
According to the researchers involved, similar systems could one day also be applied to everyday devices such as intelligent wheelchairs or advanced communication tools.
