Because cooking using sea water like Brooklyn Beckham is a crazy idea (more than ecologist)

Brooklyn Beckham, son of the famous couple David and Victoria Beckhamhe is 26 years old and lately he is making himself known for his original culinary proposals. Two days ago on Tiktok he published a video in which he cooks a simple dish like tomato dough on board a yacht.

And so far, nothing strange. But the attention of the public focused on a particular detail: To cook the spaghetti, Brooklyn used water taken directly from the sea. A choice that divided the users, between those who called it brilliant and those who judged it “not very hygienic” or even dangerous.

A sustainable idea?

At first glance, it could also seem like a logical solution: the sea is salty, so why not use it instead of the fresh water to which salt must still be added? And someone could also see it as a “green” choice, which avoids waste. But this habit is not at all without risk.

Sea water, even when it appears clear ,. At sea there are bacteria such as the Escherichia coli, viruses, microplastics, heavy metals and fuel residues. And the areas around the boats, as doctors and infectivologists also explain, are often the most contaminated, due to the discharges and residues of the billy pumps.

Another critical factor is the excess of salt. Sea water contains about 35 grams of per liter rooms, a concentration too high for our health. Cooking a dish with all this salinity means overloading the body and the kidneys, as well as risking making food inedible without dilution.

A trend that returns every summer

It is not the first time that this idea circulates on social media. In recent years we have seen friselle wet in sea water and mozzarella and burrata immersed in the waves. Every summer the scene repeats itself, attracting likes and comments, but also the concerns of the experts.

No, it is not a good idea to immerse the burrata in sea water: it is only yet another crazy trend on Tiktok

The problem is that these content risk normalizing wrong practicesespecially among the youngest or among those who do not know the risks related to marine pollution.

The intention, perhaps, was to propose a symbolic gesture against waste of water. And in a historical moment in which environmental sustainability is more urgent than ever, it is right to reflect on how to reduce consumption. But it is important to remember that being ecologists does not mean improvising chemicals or microbiologists. Preserving the environment also means knowing its limits, its critical issues and health risks. In this case, using sea water to cook is not a good idea, and it is certainly not a choice that we can define sustainable or replicable.

Brooklyn Beckham, like many other influencers, has enormous visibility. And perhaps, without wanting it, he launches messages that deserve a little more attention and responsibility.
