Best bathroom detergent 2026: the Altroconsumo test rewards a product costing less than 3 euros

Let’s face it: no one really thinks about bathroom cleaner until the bathroom is a mess. You grab the spray that’s there, spray it, hopefully. But if that bottle you’ve kept under the sink for years isn’t doing what it says it will — or worse, you’re paying more for one that performs less — it’s worth knowing. Altroconsumo tested sixteen products in the laboratory and the results are full of surprises: the most famous brand against limescale disappoints, an ecological alternative amazes, and the best of all costs less than three euros.

The products put to the test

Altroconsumo has selected specific bathroom detergents in spray format with spray nozzle, choosing from the most popular brands on the market: Ace, Amuchina, Ajax, Chanteclair, Cif, KH-7, Mastrolindo, Napisan, Smac, Quasar and Viakal. Added to the selection are two private labels – Esselunga and Coop – and three products with an ecological positioning: Ecovert, Sonett and Winni’s.

These are not specific toilet descalers or generic multipurpose ones, but products designed to remove dirt, soap and toothpaste residues, dissolve limescale and prevent its deposits on sinks, taps, showers and bathroom fixtures. Products were purchased in December 2025 and analyzes were completed in March 2026.

How the test was carried out

The most important test, which weighs 70% of the overall judgment, is that of effectiveness. To evaluate the cleaning capacity, the technicians applied artificial dirt that simulates typical bathroom dirt and left each detergent to act on both horizontal and vertical surfaces. To measure scale removal, two scale bars of standardized weight were immersed in the pure product and left to act for the time indicated by the manufacturer — or for one minute when no indication was present — after which the comparison between the initial and final weight returned the dissolving capacity of each product. The aggressiveness on the surfaces, the ability to prevent new limescale deposits and the absence of marks were also evaluated, the latter through the visual analysis of a panel of expert judges.

The environmental impact accounts for 20% of the final judgment and is based on the evaluation of the packaging and ingredients according to the lists that the producers are required to make available. The quality of the label and the degree of health risk weigh 8% and 2% respectively.

The ranking: who does well and who disappoints

On ordinary dirt almost all tested products achieve sufficient results, with only a minority failing this test. In terms of streaks, the results are on average positive, with the best products containing ingredients capable of evaporating quickly without leaving traces. The most marked differences emerge instead in the removal and prevention of limescale: some products disappoint on both fronts, others are effective in prevention but not very effective in removal, and only a few obtain satisfactory results in both tests.

These are the scores assigned by Altroconsumo to the sixteen products tested, on a scale ranging from low to excellent quality.

  2. Smac Sanitizing Bathroom — 67, good quality

The best in the test: Chanteclair Extra Brilliant Bath

The only product to achieve an excellent overall rating is Chanteclair Bagno Extra Brillante, available in a 625 ml format at an average price of 2.58 euros. Its strong point is the balance between performance and low aggressiveness for surfaces and the environment: it cleans well, is effective against limescale and leaves no obvious streaks. It is the most suitable product for regular use, when you want to keep the bathroom clean without resorting to particularly strong formulations.

The most effective on performance: Ace Bagno with anti-limescale

Those who are faced with more stubborn encrustations can focus on Ace Bagno with anti-limescale, available in a 600 ml format at an average price of 2.81 euros. It is the product with the greatest cleaning power in the test: it removes dirt, dissolves limescale and prevents its return more decisively than the others. The downside is a more aggressive formulation, which requires more care in daily use and has a more significant impact on health and the environment.

The Viakal surprise: the king of limestone that disappoints in the laboratory

If when thinking about limescale removal the first brand that comes to mind is Viakal, the results of the Altroconsumo test will change this perception. The Viakal Bagno Express Elegant Flowers version — available in a 720 ml format at an average price of 4.27 euros, among the highest in the test — was among the most disappointing in the limestone dissolution test, which is historically the ground on which this brand builds its reputation, stopping at just 45 points.

The explanation lies in the formula: this product contains only citric acid as an anti-scale ingredient, in a concentration of less than 2%. The most effective products instead combine two different acids — generally formic and citric, or lactic and citric — with a total concentration more than double. This is directly reflected in the pH of the product: acidity, i.e. a low pH, is needed to dissolve limescale, and Viakal Bagno Express Fiori Elegant is less acidic than its best-performing competitors. In the immersion test Viakal dissolves just over 40 grams of the limestone block, while the best product dissolves almost 250 grams: six times more.

Effectiveness and ecology: can they be reconciled?

A good bathroom cleaner must remove dirt and fight limescale, and many of the products tested offer both functions in a single spray thanks to formulations that combine acidic and cleansing substances. However, the more powerful formulations tend to also be more aggressive for health and have more impact on the environment, and require careful and conscious use. However, the test results demonstrate that it is not necessary to choose between performance and environmental friendliness: some eco-friendly alternatives performed well, and the absolute best product is also one of the least aggressive ones around.
