Those who eat salmon know well that it is a very nourishing fish, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. It is appreciated above all for its contribution to heart health thanks to the Omega-3s, but also for the B vitamins, vitamin D, phosphorus and selenium it contains. However, what often ends on our plate is breeding salmon, and things are complicated here.
In fact, the bullied salmon is not the healthy and natural product that is often told to us. Behind that bright pink fillet – which is actually artificially colored because it would be more popular – a reality made of animals crammed into intensive farms is hidden, treated as numbers and forced to live in inhuman conditions. Artificial feed based on animal flours, rancid oils and a massive use of antibiotics complete the picture.
Those who follow us already knew it, but for those who are still skeptical now the confirmation of an expert, the infectiousologist Matteo Bassetti arrives. Without so many laps of words, Bassetti recalls that breeding salmon are full of antibiotics, with the risk that this favors the growth of resistant bacteria, dangerous for our health.
But it does not end here: the expert recalls that these fish can also contain pesticides residues used to counter parasites, hormones (in those from some non -European countries), dioxins and microplastics. A far from healthy mix, which should make us reflect on what we really put on the plate.
Attention to the origin and quality of salmon
The expert recommends that you pay close attention to the salmon you buy. Among the worst for use of antibiotics there is salmon bred in Chile, famous for its far -controlled breeding conditions.
If possible, it is better to choose wild salmon, such as Alaska that is caught, or the breeding salmon from the Faroe Islands, which guarantee more rigorous standards and limited use of antibiotics compared to other countries.
