Pink noise, also known by the English term pink noiseis a particular form of “coloured” noise in which the sound energy decreases as the frequency increases, following a distribution called “1/f”. In simple terms, the power of frequencies is inversely proportional to their pitch: the lower (i.e. lower) a frequency is, the more intense it is.
In practice, it is a sound that contains all audible frequencies, just like white noise, but with one key difference: the lower frequencies (the deep ones) are louder and the higher frequencies (the sharp ones) are more attenuated. While white noise resembles TV static, pink noise recalls sounds found in nature and the environment. The sensation is that of a muffled background, which envelops without disturbing.
Many natural sounds, such as light rain, the rustle of the wind in the leaves or the murmur of the sea, resemble pink noise in spectrum and timbre. It is precisely this similarity with the natural environment that makes it an increasingly used tool to promote concentration, relax or fall asleep more easily.
How pink noise can promote sleep and reduce anxiety
One of the most popular effects of pink noise is its ability to mask sudden sounds from the surrounding environment, such as a car horn in the night or a dog barking. By creating a continuous, stable and predictable background sound, it helps the brain maintain a state of calm, counteracting the sensory hyperactivity that often hinders falling asleep.
Furthermore, pink noise can reduce the so-called “mental noise”, overthinking, or the continuous flow of thoughts that crowd the mind before sleeping. The uniform sound without sudden variations has a calming effect that can facilitate relaxation and the transition to sleep.
Several preliminary studies have also hypothesized a role for pink noise in improving the quality of deep sleep and promoting memory consolidation, especially when listened to at night. However, most research is based on small samples and very controlled conditions, and for this reason scientific evidence still remains limited.
What science says
An important clinical study published in 2024 in the journal Scientific Reports provided new confirmation on the potential of pink noise as a sleep aid, particularly for those suffering from insomnia due to difficulty falling asleep.
The team led by Scott Bressler conducted a trial on 21 subjects with sleep latency greater than 30 minutes, using a wearable EEG band (the ENMod device). During a 30-minute window before falling asleep, participants received pulses of pink noise synchronized with the “trough” phase of alpha brain waves, those associated with waking with eyes closed.
The goal was to strategically disrupt alpha activity, which tends to hinder entry into sleep. The results were promising: the latency to fall asleep was reduced by an average of 29%, or about 10.5 minutes less than in the placebo condition.
This is one of the first clinical studies to show how pink noise, if delivered in a targeted and personalized way, can really speed up falling asleep in subjects with insomnia. Although based on a small sample, the study opens new perspectives for the use of pink noise as a non-pharmacological alternative to sleeping pills.
Benefits, limitations and precautions
Despite the growing enthusiasm, it’s worth remembering that listening to pink noise must be properly calibrated to be truly useful. Excessive volume, or an unbalanced sound spectrum (with too many high frequencies), can become annoying and cause the opposite effect to relaxation.
Furthermore, preferences are very subjective: what is calming for one person may be irritating for another. That’s why it’s important to experiment gradually, starting with natural sounds and carefully adjusting the volume, until you find the type of pink noise that best suits your hearing and psychological profile.
