Car dragged away by mud and evacuated schools: Ischia relives the nightmare nightmare

A violent storm hit the island of Ischia in today’s morning, causing over 100 millimeters of rain in a few hours. The most interested area is the Municipality of Forio, where intense rainfall has transformed the roads into real streams, submerging vehicles and making connections difficult. The authorities now speak openly of floods in progress, with consequences widespread throughout the island.

Evacuated schools and fear among citizens

Among the most urgent interventions, the evacuation of the Marconi kindergarten in Ischia Porto, where water infiltrations threatened the stability of the roof, was necessary. Also in Forio, in another school, students and staff have experienced moments of strong tension for the risk of collapse. Fortunately, there are no injuries, but the fear between children and teachers was remarkable.

The images of the carabinieri carabinieri

The torrential rains also hit the police hard: two cars of the carabinieri parked in Forio were almost entirely submerged by the water. Numerous calls have reached the firefighters, engaged on multiple fronts between saves, safety of buildings and removal of debris. In Lacco Ameno the main course was impractical due to the flooding, while in Casamicciola new railings of mud and soil in the hilly areas have occurred, already severely marked by the 2022 flood.

A lightning storm

In addition to the rains, the island was also affected by a real lightning storm. In Forio a home was centered by an electric discharge, without serious consequences for residents. However, the episode increased the level of alert among the population, already tested by the water emergency and the difficulties in traveling.

Appeals to prudence

The municipality of Forio and the other municipalities of the island have released urgent notices to citizenship, inviting residents not to leave the house if not for reasons strictly necessary and to avoid travel by car or feet in the most exposed areas. The authorities underline that the risk of landslides, collapses and flooding remains high until the weather conditions are not improvement.

The episode once again shows us the vulnerability of the Island of Ischia in the face of extreme weather phenomena, increasingly frequent in recent years and capable of transforming a storm into a danger for the entire community. Unfortunately, the story repeats itself and the tragedies already occurred have not taught us to protect such a fragile territory at the mercy of climate change.
