Christmas decorations with old keys: it’s amazing what you can do, from place cards to tree decorations

From place cards to tree decorations, from garlands to decorative keys for interior doors, it is incredible what can be achieved by painting or festively decorating the keys unused. Simple and original crafts that anyone can make with their own hands, taking inspiration from this selection of creative ideas.

Hand painted keys

Painting old keys requires a bit of skill and precision given their small size, but it’s nothing impossible. The important thing is to choose the subject to reproduce before starting, based on the shape of the key. Do some tests on paper and when you are convinced, copy the subject onto the key. But first, pass it with some sandpaper and immediately afterwards, with the acrylic colours, get to work.

If you want to hang the keys on the tree, add a Christmas ribbon.

Decorations for the tree

Another cute, but simpler idea is to paint old keys white, red or gold. Also in this case the keys must be sanded and painted with acrylic colours. Add a Christmas ribbon to hang them on the tree.

Garland

With the keys you can also make a beautiful Christmas wreath: get a circular wreath, glue the keys on top of the wreath with hot glue until it is completely covered. Hang in the center of the garland, using a ribbon, some balls and some Christmas bells.

Keys for decorated doors

How about decorating the keys to the internal doors for a party? Simply tie a satin or red velvet ribbon around the key adding a sprig of evergreen.

Placeholder

The keys can also be transformed into placeholders for the Christmas table: you can paint them different colors and write the guests’ initials on each of them. Or put a note with your name in your keys.
