Coffee capsules, you will no longer be able to throw them in the garbage: here’s when and what changes with the new EU rules

For years they have been one of the symbols of convenience and speed in a moment that should actually be slow. Now single-dose coffee capsules officially end up under the scrutiny of the European Union.

With the entry into force of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR – Regulation on packaging and packaging waste EU 2025/40), from 12 August the rules on their disposal will change: single-dose capsules become packaging in all respects and can no longer be thrown into unsorted waste.

The legislation, which came into force in February 2025 and is now operational, effectively establishes that all single-dose capsules – used and with coffee residues – must be sent for recycling. A step that is anything but marginal, given that we are talking about one of the most widespread and problematic types of waste in European homes.

Brussels’ objective is clear: reduce packaging waste by 5% by 2030 compared to 2018 levels, reaching a 15% cut by 2040. And capsules, due to their complexity and numbers, are a decisive test bed.

The problem with capsules is well known: they are multi-component packaging, difficult to separate and therefore to recycle.

According to Biorepack data, in Italy almost 3 billion are consumed per year, but only 6% is compostable. The rest is made up of:

A mountain of waste which, until now, almost always ended up in the unsorted bin. With the new rules, the entire supply chain is called to reorganize.

And sustainable capsules?

Towards 100% sustainable capsules? It’s not just a hypothesis. The EU regulation provides that from 2030 member states can ban the sale of certain products if they are not made with sustainable materials. Coffee capsules could make the list, pushing the market towards bioplastics or fully recyclable solutions.

But August 12 also marks a turning point for other everyday products. From 2030 many single-use plastic packaging will be banned, including:

From next August the obligation for uniform labeling at EU level will also come into force: each packaging must clearly indicate how and where to dispose of it. Without correct information, the product cannot be sold.
