A precautionary recall of a batch of coffee from supermarkets has been triggered. The subject of the recall is the Gimoka Gusto Ricco product sold in pre-packaged vacuum-packed packages in the stores of the Penny Market discount store, which issued the warning.
The reason for the measure is the possible presence of Ochratoxin A beyond the legal limits, which could be harmful to health.
Details of the recall
The recall concerns the H26A production batch of Gimoka Gusto Ricco ground coffee sold in 250 gram packs, with an expiry date: 08-26-2027. It is produced by the Gimoka SpA Group in the factory in Via delle Industrie 4a, 23009 Andalo Valtellino (SO).
The risks associated with ochratoxin A
But what exactly is Ochratoxin A? It is a mycotoxin produced by some molds of the Aspergillus and Penicillium genera, which can form in foods such as cereals, coffee, cocoa, spices and dried fruit. It is heat resistant, so roasting the coffee doesn’t completely eliminate it.
As also reported by EFSA, ochratoxin A can be genotoxic, i.e. it directly damages DNA, and is classified as possibly carcinogenic to the kidney.
Therefore, if you bought the recalled batch of coffee, return it to the point of sale.
