A message entrusted to the sea, as in the tales of the past, has re-issued from the silence of the waves a story that warms the heart. On the Salina dei Monaci beach in San Pietro in Bevagna, Puglia, a worn and light bottle yielded simple but meaningful words, written by a ten-year-old girl for a grandfather she never met because he died before she was born.
The treasure was discovered by Cinzia Miccoli, a teacher from San Donaci, during a winter walk on the shore. The woman said she found a bottle with a squared sheet of paper inside, marked by time and water, but full of emotion and memory.
A grandfather I never met
The letter reveals a bond built through the mother’s stories:
Hi grandfather Marcello, even though I never met you, mother often tells me about you, about when you fixed bicycles…
He continues explaining the choice to entrust the message to the sea:
I will put this letter in a bottle and hope it reaches you, so you read it.
A simple gesture, but full of hope and tenderness that transforms the sea into a true bridge between generations.
Details of his daily life emerge in the text: family, brothers and small shared challenges. The little girl also reveals the reason why she couldn’t meet her grandfather:
The mother also tells us that you wanted grandchildren, but unfortunately you flew to heaven due to cancer. I wanted to meet you, but I couldn’t because I was born in 2016 and you died in 2014. For two years I couldn’t meet you.
An anonymous and undated letter
The little girl reveals that she also has two other brothers who “sometimes they are good and almost always bad” and explains that he decided to send the letter on the occasion of the 12th anniversary of his death. The final part of the letter is a simple and sincere farewell:
I hope you will read it, I made it from my heart.
No need for complicated sentences: the emotion is already all there, between the irregular lines and the innocent writing of the little girl. At the moment it is not known who the author is or when she created it since it is not dated but it does not matter how long it traveled: what matters is the message it transmits.
This letter is in fact a great little example of the human need to stay connected, even beyond time and distance. A story that demonstrates how love and memory can cross any border, transforming a simple sheet of paper into a bridge between distant hearts.
