Defective Takata airbags: 1.6 million at risk of explosion recalled in Italy, check if your car is involved

A technical defect known for years now, but still far from resolved, continues to represent a real danger for motorists, even in Italy.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, with a notice released on 4 February 2026, drew citizens’ attention to the continuation of the extraordinary recall campaign for Takata airbags, which involves vehicles from numerous car manufacturers (Honda, Toyota, BMW, Ford, Nissan, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Chrysler, Fiat, to name a few).

The problem is not insignificant, in fact, in certain environmental conditions – high humidity, high temperatures or strong temperature changes – some airbags produced by Takata can degrade internally and, upon activation, explode abnormally, projecting metal fragments into the passenger compartment. A risk that can cause serious injuries or even fatal outcomes for the driver and passengers.

Why Takata airbags are dangerous

The defect concerns in particular the airbag gas generator, which is based on stabilized ammonium nitrate without desiccant. With time and exposure to adverse weather conditions, this material can become unstable. In the event of an accident, instead of inflating correctly, the airbag can rupture violently, transforming from a safety device into a real threat.

The risk is greater for older vehicles, cars used in areas with a hot and humid climate and vehicles that have undergone strong temperature variations.

The numbers of the recall in Italy

The official data paint a picture that is anything but reassuring. The Takata airbag recall campaigns in Italy have in fact affected approximately 4 million vehicles belonging to numerous automotive brands. Of these, 3.2 million owners have already been formally notified, but the problem is far from solved: around 1.6 million vehicles equipped with defective airbags are still in circulation today.

Replacement is free (and can save your life)

Precisely for this reason the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport invites citizens not to ignore the warning notices. The replacement of the defective airbag is completely free and is carried out exclusively at workshops authorized by the manufacturers. In some particularly critical situations, the recall may also include a “Stop Drive”, i.e. a temporary ban on use of the vehicle until repairs have been carried out. A simple intervention, which takes little time, but which can make the difference for your safety.

How to check if your vehicle is affected by the recall

Checking whether your car is affected by the recall is a quick and fundamental operation. It is important to do this even if no official communication has arrived, especially if you own a used car, use a company or third-party vehicle, or if you have changed address over the years and the notification may not have been delivered correctly.

To proceed, simply retrieve the chassis number (VIN), which is found in the registration document, and access the official portal of the manufacturer or the UNRAE recall database. By entering the VIN in the dedicated section, the system will immediately indicate whether the vehicle is involved in the recall campaign and, if so, will specify whether it is a simple recall or a recall with Stop Drive. In both cases it is essential to contact an authorized workshop without delay to schedule the replacement.

The updated list of the car manufacturers involved and the links to the official pages dedicated to recalls is available on the websites of the individual manufacturers and in the UNRAE Recalls database, also accessible via the dedicated portal.
