A century of flavors and traditions
The strawberries of Nemi, famous throughout Italy for their bright color and intense flavor, have roots that even sink into ancient Rome. The ancient Romans consumed them during the idi of June, coinciding with the celebrations in honor of Adone. This tradition has continued over the centuries, transforming itself into the “triumph of strawberries” which was held on June 13 in Campo de ‘Fiori, in conjunction with the feast of Sant’Antonio.
Since 1922, the Nemi community has decided to dedicate a real festival to this special fruit, which has become a symbol of local identity. The protagonists of the event are the “fragula”, women who according to tradition offer strawberries to visitors in characteristic wicker baskets, wearing traditional clothes that recall the peasant history of the territory.
