Do you dream of visiting the Christmas markets of Germany and Switzerland? You can reach them from Italy on board historic trains

This winter, Christmas runs on tracks full of history thanks to the Verbano Express Association, which organizes two special trips to reach the Christmas markets in Basel and Constance. These are not simple journeys, but true experiences of other times: vintage carriages, panoramic windows and alpine landscapes that pass slowly, between snow-capped mountains and illuminated villages. On board, time seems to slow down. The rhythm of the train accompanies travelers on an immersive journey, where the journey becomes part of the destination.

From Milan to Basel: the magic of the Gotthard

The first appointment is set for Saturday 29 November, with departure at dawn from Milan Centrale and intermediate stops in Gallarate, Luino and Bellinzona. The convoy will cross the historic Gotthard line, inaugurated in 1882, offering breathtaking views of lakes, valleys and snow-capped peaks until arriving in Basel.

Here, between Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz, visitors will be able to stroll among hundreds of decorated stalls, breathe in the scent of cinnamon and mulled wine, taste the traditional Basler Läckerli and admire one of the most evocative cities in Switzerland during the holidays.

Costanza and the market on the lake

The second Christmas trip will leave on Saturday 13 December from Luino to Constance, Germany, to experience the atmosphere of the famous Weihnachtsmarkt am See, the Christmas market which directly overlooks Lake Constance.

More than 170 stalls between the port and the historic center will welcome visitors with crafts, decorations and spicy desserts. Don’t miss the Weihnachtsschiff, the market ship moored at the port, where you can browse the stalls while sipping a hot drink with a view of the lake.
