Dying from a selfie: 15 year old crushed by a boulder to take a photo on the piave

An afternoon of light -heartedness turned into tragedy in Busche, in the Belluno area, where a 15 -year -old girl lost her life and a peer friend was injured, but not in danger of life. The two teenagers, together with a third 16 -year -old girl, were near the bridge that connects Busche to Cesana, in an area known as Cesana Beach, a green area frequented by young people and families on the banks of Piave.

According to the first reconstructions, the three girls would have ventured on the massive of the bridge, climbing near the pylon anchored to the rocky wall overlooking the river, with the intention of taking a photo.

During climbing, however, a large block of rock suddenly detached itself, collapsing on the two 15 -year -olds. One of the two died instantly, while the other reported multiple fractures. The third friend, left further back, managed to save himself and remained unharmed.

When a selfie costs too much: no photo is worth a lifetime

What should be a moment of joy and sharing can transform, in an instant, into a tragedy. It happens more and more often, unfortunately. The desire for a spectacular shot – to be posted on social media to amaze – pushes many people, not only young people, to challenge common sense and security.

You climb up to unstable structures, your feet protrude in the void, you are looking for isolated and dangerous places in order to obtain the “perfect photo”. But behind that handful of likes, a huge risk can be hidden.

The new drama of Belluno reminds us how thin the border between an emotion to be shared and a gesture that can cost life. In many cases the real awareness of the danger is missing. And it is from there that we must start: promoting a culture of security, respect for themselves and for those who love us.

Because life, the real one, is the greatest show we have. And it is never worth losing it for a handful of likes.
