A young male alce, renamed Emil, has become a viral phenomenon in the summer of 2025 thanks to his long journey through central Europe. From Poland to the Czech Republic, passing through Slovakia and finally Austria, his journey has attracted thousands of fans who followed his adventures through Facebook groups and online trackers.
The sightings of the animal have often created curiosities and inconveniences: at the beginning of September Emil even found themselves on the tracks of the central station of St. Pölten, forcing to temporarily block the main Vienna-Salismurg railway line.

The capture near the highway
His race stopped on Monday, when the Austrian authorities found Emil near a highway in Sattledt, in Alta Austria, right during the top hour. For safety reasons, the animal was reassured and subsequently equipped with a GPS collar. After the investigations, Emil was freed on the margins of the Bohema forest, on the border with the Czech Republic, in an area considered safer for him and for motorists.
The criticisms of animalists
Not everyone accepted the news with enthusiasm. The Tierschutz Austria association has contested the methods of capture, speaking of poor clarity and collaboration.

In a second post on social networks, he also stressed how everything could fall if Emil had crossed the highway:
Emil’s situation clearly shows that it is urgent to create more corridors for wildlife along the highways and railway lines to avoid conflicts between man and wildlife.
According to activists, the episode highlights the fragility of the balance between wild animals and modern infrastructures, raising a debate that goes beyond the individual case.
