The Municipality of Pescara has announced the start of a process that will lead to the elimination of synthetic raffia umbrellas and plastic fringes from the city’s beach establishments. The process, which will begin in 2026, involves the complete replacement of these materials by 2028.
The decision was communicated by Plastic Free Onlus, an association that promoted a national petition on the topic last May. According to what was declared by the organization, the measure was born from the collaboration between the municipal administration and the managers of the bathing establishments.
Luca De Gaetano, president of Plastic Free Onlus, highlighted how plastic umbrellas release filaments that can disperse into the marine environment. The association underlined the willingness of local beachgoers to face the transition to alternative materials.
The municipal administration will issue a specific ordinance to regulate the transition to the new materials.
Pescara has received recognition as a Plastic Free Municipality 2025. The association has declared that it will continue to provide support during the transition period, proposing awareness-raising activities aimed at citizens, beach operators and tourists.
The measure is part of the initiatives to reduce microplastic pollution in Italian coastal areas.
