From today 5 September until Thursday 10 September, diesel fuel used as fuel will benefit from a further extension to the excise duty cut, amounting in particular to 14 cents per litre. But the measure could also be the last government intervention of this type.
In order to compensate for the greater revenue from the value added tax compared to the latest forecast, deriving from the increase in the international price, expressed in euros, of crude oil – as stated in decree 205 of 4 September 2026 published in the Official Journal – for the period from 6 September 2026 to 10 September 2026, the excise duty rate on gas or diesel oils, used as fuel (…) is redetermined to the extent of 532.90 euros per thousand litres
Considering that the ordinary rate expected for diesel in 2026 is equal to 672.90 euros per thousand litres, the discount on the excise duty amounts to 140 euros per thousand litres, i.e. 14 cents per litre. Not very little especially on many litres.
But the general price of fuel continues to rise: in fact, according to data from the Observatory on fuel prices in Ministry of Business and Made in Italytoday 5 September the average price in mode self service along the national road network it is equal to 2.052 euros per liter for petrol (against 2.046 euros yesterday 4 September) and 2.164 euros per liter for diesel (against 2.157 euros yesterday 4 September).
Furthermore, this cut could be the last: since March there have been 7 at a cost of around 2 billion, and this last one in particular around 60 million euros, financed with mobile excise duties, i.e. with the August VAT increase on fuel following the price increase in July.

Other measures are on the way, but this time they will be targeted – said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the party for the government’s longevity record – We cannot afford to spend money to give it to those who don’t need it or come to get petrol from France
However, there is no information yet on the nature of these measures.
But above all, in 1996 a 50 liter tank of petrol cost around 46.43 euros, in the second quarter of 2026 92.72 were needed. As for diesel, the jump is even more dramatic: from 36.50 to 100.97 euros.
In fact, in 30 years, the cost of petrol has doubled, while that of diesel has almost tripled.
