A PONTE train for the island
The convoy starts from Turin on 30 July and the whole descent of Italy is made: Milan, Parma, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Salerno … Then via Messina is divided between Palermo and Syracuse. The return is scheduled for August 23. If you organize yourself well, you can do three weeks of full Sicily.
Affordable prices, but only for those who arrive before
Tickets start from 29.90 euros, not bad, considering that in some days a low cost flight to Sicily costs more than a train to Berlin. But watch out: the seats are limited, and even if now it’s not all over, the rhythm is that. Available on Trenitalia apps, site, ticket offices and agencies. Those who first click, better travel.
As has already happened for the Easter holidays, the tickets, 540 in all, of which 10 reserved for influencers and actors – have been sold in less than half an hour, between controversy and located on tilt. There have been several criticisms for the limited ability and for the questionable effectiveness against the dear-can. Despite everything, the success of the initiative had pushed the Region to evaluate a second train for the holidays.
Sustainable, yes. But still too occasional
The Sicily Region is keen to say that it is an ecological option: less CO2, less environmental impact, all right. But the problem remains: it is a temporary thing, seasonal, and that does not last long. To really change things, it is necessary continuity, not just a special race in August.
The usual limit: high demand, low demand
Sicily Express is proof that people a direct train for the island wants it. There is the request, there is interest, there are clicks. But as long as it is a one -sided tantum, it will remain a beautiful but useless initiative for most of the Sicilians who live away from home. And that, by force of things, they will continue to fly. When they manage to afford it.
A first step (but small)
This summer train is a signal, good, but that’s not enough. If you really want to talk about more sustainable and accessible mobility, stable connections are needed, all year round. For now, there is only this, and it will not last long, so if you are interested: move. Tickets, for now, are there, but they will not last.
