The affiliated general practitioners will go on strike on 15 and 16 September 2026. This was announced by a note from the National Secretariat of the Italian Doctors’ Union, which motivates the protest with the contrast to the national collective agreement on Community Houses, signed last 23 June. Over the two days, demonstrations and assemblies are planned in various cities (Rome, Rieti, Milan, Palermo, Naples, Pescara) promoted by the SMI or with its membership.
The reasons for the protest
The SMI’s platform of demands is divided into a series of “no” and “yes”:
In the absence of precise commitments from the public sector, the doctors were forced to go on strikewe read in the note, which extends beyond the boundaries of the union: the appeal is addressed to all doctors, SMI members and not, for a united action to defend the profession. The calendar for September 15th
For the first day of the strike, the SMI announced the program city by city. In Rome, meeting open to all doctors from Lazio from 10am to 1pm at the union headquarters, in via Sambucuccio d’Alando 9. In Naples, meeting from 11.30am at the Rai headquarters in via Guglielmo Marconi 9. In Pescara, initiative from 9.30am at the Hotel Regent, on the Lungomare Colombo Cristoforo.
In Palermo, demonstration from 10.30am in Piazza Ottavio Ziino, in front of the headquarters of the Health Department of the Sicilian Region. In Milan, the SMI takes part from 10 to 12 in the event organized by Lamg, the Free Association of General Medicine, in Piazza Duca d’Aosta.
The petition on the reform of general medicine
In the same note, the SMI also claims a result that it considers positive: petition no. 1451, promoted by the general secretary Pina Onotri to ask for legislative provisions and resources dedicated to the reform of general medicine, collected more than 9,800 signatures in 40 days.
