Family in the woods: the Court of Appeal rejects the appeal, the children remain in the family home

The Court of Appeal of L’Aquila rejected the appeal presented by Nathan Trevallion and Catherine Birmingham, the parents of the now strange “family in the woods”, against the order of the Juvenile Court which last November 20th ordered the removal of their three children.

They will therefore remain in the family home in Vasto, where they are currently alone with their mother.

In the meantime, the father has moved to a house offered on loan for use by a restaurateur who has shown solidarity with their case. For the family in the woods, therefore, the situation remains that of the order that led to the transfer of the children from Palmoli to Vasto on November 20th.

Is it right yes or no?

We will no longer go into the merits and, above all, we have no intention of riding on the gut feelings of most people, especially after the heartfelt words of judge Maria Martello:

“For the family of the forest, no respect or confidentiality”: judge Maria Martello explains what we did wrong

What remains for us to say is that it is important to recognize the work of judges, who find themselves managing a complex reality, making difficult choices to protect minors. However, it is clear that these stories, when they leave the judicial dimension and become the subject of media attention, risk being exploited by politicians and public opinions who often ignore the human pain behind legal decisions.

The protection of children’s rights should never become a political battleground, but unfortunately, too often, events involving fragile families become “cannon fodder” for superficial debates and pre-packaged opinions. In these cases, it is essential to maintain a balance, always remembering that every decision is taken with the aim of protecting minors, and not of fueling ideological conflicts.
