Finland, the Turku archipelago is looking for a “nose”: 2000 euros to be the “perfumer” of the islands. How and who can apply

Smell the sea air, the pine forests, the smoke from the wood-fired saunas, or the freshly baked bread, and get paid for it. It is the offer, serious in form and a little less in substance, launched by Visit Turku Archipelago, the company that promotes tourism in Turku, Naantali, Parainen and the archipelago that surrounds them, in south-west Finland. The campaign is called Get a Nose Joba play on words which in English also alludes to rhinoplasty. The organization is looking for a “nose” willing to spend between five and seven days on the islands, between May and June 2027.

The task: name the smells

In the perfume industry the nose is the perfumer who recognizes, evaluates and combines essences. Here the white coat is not needed, the organization specifies on the dedicated page. The chosen one will have to tour the archipelago, analyze its smells and describe them in such a way as to make others want to smell them. He will also have to document everything with photos and videos, which will end up on the institution’s social channels, and at the end give an honest account of what he smelled.

The stated aim is to demonstrate that the Saaristo, as the Finns call the archipelago, is the most fragrant destination in the world. The organizers admit that this is a bold statement, not the result of a laboratory test. In support they cite IQAir’s World Air Quality Report 2025, where Finland ranks fourth in Europe for air quality, after Iceland, Andorra and Estonia (the organisation, with a bit of generosity towards itself, speaks of third place). They also put their hands forward, stating that if something were to stink, it would mean that the nose is working great, including deer droppings.

Pay, requirements and how to apply

The compensation is 2 thousand euros gross for the entire role, plus the holiday allowance provided for by Finnish law, the same for all candidates. You need at least 18 years of age, the right to work in Finland, availability for the entire period and a device for shooting videos and taking photos (a smartphone is also fine). Applications from abroad are permitted. For an Italian, as for any citizen of the Union, the right to work derives from free movement.

To participate, you must publish an application video on Instagram or TikTok, with the tag @saaristo_finland and the hashtag #NoseJob. The link to the video must then be pasted into the online form, along with a few lines about it. The link to the profile is not enough, and the profile must be public, otherwise no one in Turku will be able to see the video. Applications will close on October 25th, and the final itinerary will be communicated only to the chosen one. After all, for a job like this, it’s best to go by nose.
