Forget the bought nativity scene: with these recycled materials you create unique masterpieces

Are you more of a fan of the Christmas tree or the nativity scene? Or do you like both? In any case, this year focus on creative recycling for your decorations, including figurines, houses and nativity scene characters.

Numerous materials are suitable for this purpose, from wooden pepper pots to cardboard, and the result, we guarantee, will be superlative.

DIY nativity scene with pepper pots and old wooden objects

Pepper pots, spheres and other wooden elements recovered from old everyday objects are transformed, with a little imagination and a few touches of colour, into a nativity scene that is nothing short of wonderful. The idea comes from The House That Lars Built who on their blog explains to us step by step how to make it happen.

It’s all about combining the various pieces of wood with creativity, gluing them to each other with hot glue. It is not necessary that they are identical to those in the tutorial, the important thing is to take inspiration.

Then we move on to painting with acrylic colors and brush. Before starting, choose a color palette. The super-lively one from The House That Lars Built is definitely a great idea!

DIY nativity scene with old pallet

Even old pallets can be recycled to make original nativity scenes, like the following one made by Lehman Lane who in this tutorial explains step by step how to bring them to life.

DIY nativity scene made of cardboard and recycled cardboard

With a little creativity, scissors, pencil and cutter in hand, you can make your own nativity scene even with simple recycled cardboard. Obviously the more details you add, the more complex the creation will be.

But you can also limit yourself to drawing and cutting out the individual characters, the palm trees, and some background elements, composing the whole thing.

Cardboard is also suitable for creating characters. Trace the shapes with a pencil, cut them out with scissors, available on a flat surface in a corner of the house.

DIY nativity scene with branches

Do you have any branches that you use to make a fire? Clean them and reuse them for your DIY nativity scene.

Make sure they are not too thin but not too thick either. Cut some pieces at least ten centimeters high or even more, and use hot glue to apply wooden spheres, which you will have personalized with little eyes and a mouth.

Add the various details depending on the characters of the nativity scene you want to create.

If you want to add a touch of color, you can dress the characters with felt. All you need to do is draw the clothes on them with a pencil, cut them out with scissors and use a needle and thread to make clothes and accessories, customizing them as you like. If you don’t know how to sew, you can help yourself with hot glue.
