The Municipality of Bacoli takes a historic step in the fight against menstrual poverty. For the first time in Campania, free and compostable sanitary napkin dispensers will be installed in schools and municipal offices, guaranteeing anyone who needs access to essential products for women’s well-being. A clear signal of attention to women and recognition of sanitary pads as basic necessities.
The words of the mayor of Bacoli
Mayor Josi Gerardo Della Ragione, already known for a series of battles against the exploitation of animals and in defense of free beaches, commented on the project as follows:
We have decided to install free and compostable sanitary napkin dispensers in the municipal offices and schools of Bacoli. It’s not just a service, it’s a clear political choice: considering sanitary pads as basic necessities. And their high cost is a social injustice that we must try to ascertain with all our energy. To reduce gender inequalities. We are the first municipality in Campania to adopt this choice which, I hope, is increasingly widespread.
In addition to guaranteeing free access to tampons, the Municipality of Bacoli intends to support the national fight for the elimination of VAT on menstrual products, the so-called Tampon Tax. According to the body, making pads and tampons available in public places is not only a question of economic equity, but also a public health and rights protection measure.
A concrete step against menstrual poverty
The Council’s decision, proposed by councilor Cinzia Massa, aims to combat so-called menstrual poverty, i.e. the economic impossibility of accessing adequate hygiene products during the period. Guaranteeing free sanitary napkins allows women to experience menstruation with greater dignity, reducing the economic burden on the most fragile families and promoting a culture of equity and inclusion.
Towards a broader path
The Municipality has already announced that this first measure represents only the first step in a series of interventions dedicated to gender equality and the well-being of women in the area. Bacoli thus aims to be a model to be replicated for other municipalities, demonstrating that local administrations can also have a concrete impact on people’s lives. An apparently simple gesture but which in reality becomes a symbol of social justice and attention to human rights.
